One Year Passed

Episode 1 - 7/2/13

So one year has gone by and here we are with our First Anniversary Show!

We’ve been training with Jenel Stevens as you’ve seen on our past blogs.  We are in a bit of a transition because we need to find more time in the afternoon for things like FourC and other personal stuff so we really need to commit to morning workouts!

In reflection of this year, we’ve come to realize a few things:

It is important to recognize growth on your journey.  It is also important to know when it’s necessary to make a shift in a new direction.  We have grown this year, but we’ve also settled more into our new lifestyle and our new bodies.  We don’t obsess over the scale the way we used to, we don’t obsess over our workouts – we try to keep a healthy balance.

But at the same time we recognize when we need to kick things up and we have learned that consistency is key.  Stopping and starting gets you no where, this is something we continue to recognize on our path to our goals.

Many might think it’s weird that we still have goals, but we think that’s what life is all about, setting goals and accomplishing things, it’s my opinion that the minute you become complacent you give up or stop growing.  What’s life without constantly trying to better yourself & your lot in life?

We started the show to help others and we hope we have been able to do that in our first year.  We plan to continue to help others while branching out and growing in new directions.

It’s not always about “weight loss” or the scale, it’s not about working out 24/7.  It’s about loving yourself enough to be healthy for yourself and your family.  To live a long and happy life, to find what it is that makes you happy and to enjoy that to the fullest.

A big thing we have learned this year is that special occasions are just that, special occasions – we have grown to not “cheat” just because it’s the weekend.  I am sure we will continue to grow and learn more this year and we thank you all for being on this journey with us!

We watched back our first show and we notice a few things that are the same and a few things that have changed!

On the first show:

Lisa was yelling into the microphone
We were cross fitting
We were eating Paleo
We struggled with early morning workouts
We preached finding what works for you
We were not runners but we were gearing up for the Color Run in Brooklyn
Our workout recovery was sweet potatoes

FourC Fitness Now:

Still eating Paleo and have successfully completed two Whole30’s

Still struggling to wake up for AM workouts but will not give up

Personally grown to know what works and what doesn’t work for us both exercise wise and eating wise.

We have met so many amazing people, guests and non-guests in the fitness community and those needing inspiration and guidance.

Our amazing past guests have included:

- Our first guest was Jenel Stevens, who has now been our personal trainer and has become a good friend.

-JoAnne Romanelli taught us more about Creating Energy and the self help we can use along with natural products to help with our energy levels!

What is The City Challenge Race?

City Challenge Obstacle Race is an event in promotion of health and fitness that everyone can enjoy no matter what their fitness levels might be. Our challengers range from the age of 14 to 70 years old. While you are timed and ranked against your colleagues, friends, and other teams we focus on the stories of our challengers. What obstacles and challenges have they overcome to compete at our race?

In the past we gave awards to: Robert Quinonez who lost 90 lbs. and overcame diabetes while training for one of our events, Jaziel Almanzar a baby of just 16 months who was born with half a heart and lived in a hospital for the first 3 months of his life, James Partlow who is a former navy seal and at 68 years young just completed his first City Challenge Race, and Daniel Jacobs who was diagnosed with a life threatening bone cancer in 2011 and overcame that to win a world title as a professional boxer in 2013. These are some of the challengers that we honor at our events. These individuals inspire City Challenge Obstacle Race and help us create events where our community can come together in celebration of health and fitness!

Elvi Guzman, founder of City Challenge Obstacle Race grew up in Central Jersey and was an active child.  He played baseball, basketball, and football, in middle school and high school. He participated in the New Jersey Golden Gloves as a middleweight boxer three years consecutively.

After High School, Elvi attended college in Miami Florida at Florida International University.

He has always been inspired by great athletes like their accomplishment but more importantly what it took them to get there. Their determination, dedication, hard will and inspires him to be great and to live out his dreams.

He was inspired to create City Challenge Obstacle Race to help our community fight diseases that can be prevented with an active lifestyle of physical fitness. Diseases like diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure and others.

He realizes how great you can feel with consistent exercise, how productive you can be, and wants you to feel the same. He wants to encourage Challengers to Conquer Their Challenges whatever they may be!

Elvi founded The City Challenge Race in 2013.  The first race was in Hoboken, New Jersey on October 5, 2013. The race benefits Susan G. Komen of North Jersey.

We are the fastest growing urban obstacle race series in the country! City Challenge Race transforms vibrant cities with breathtaking skylines into an exciting obstacle course with walls to get over, water jugs to carry, ropes to climb, cargo nets to climb, sand bags to carry, monkey bars and much more. This unique event is designed to get communities active, test your athleticism, fortitude, and get you out of your comfort zone. We inspire everyone to live a fit and healthy lifestyle. City Challenge Race also raises funds and awareness for local charities and breast cancer.

While races like Spartan, Tough Mudder, and Warrior Dash have become extremely popular it occurred to us to have our challengers run through city streets while attempting to conquer challenging obstacles that do not include water, mud, electrocution, or barbed wire. We are the clean obstacle race. Besides who really wants to risk getting electrocuted, suffer cuts by barbed wire, or ruin a great pair of shoes in disgusting dirty mud? And unlike the other guys, we hate to see back-ups on our courses so we limit each wave of runners to 200 racers to avoid overcrowding. Our race will feature energetic, fun, intense, and clean obstacles! Join active residents of vibrant cities and run through city streets with amazing backdrops of the hosting city’s skyline!  The mission of City Challenge is to enable you to have the most exciting day of your life…period. Our event provides the perfect platform for you to have a great time with friends and family, bond with co-workers, and just have an all-around great time at our event! We strike the perfect balance between fun and physicality. Participating in City Challenge Obstacle Race will be the most fun ass-kicking of your life!

Upcoming Races:

Hoboken on Sept 20, 2014

Randall’s Island on October 5, 2014

Who is average2athlete?

We were first introduced to average2athlete when we met Julia Avery at a Civilian Military Combine Pre-Race Challenge at Reebok Fithub! Julia was so easy to talk to and we loved the story of average2athlete so we had to share them with you all!

Welcome to average2athlete! We’re Kayte and Julia, two friends who met at New York Sports Club and immediately bonded over our love of fitness and competitive nature.

We found ourselves constantly sharing workout ideas and recipes, so we thought, why not create a site where we can share our fitness obsession with a larger audience? Thus, average2athlete was born.

Our goal is to provide a little bit of insight on how to make healthier choices in both fitness and health, regardless of budget, busy lifestyles or anything else that might get in the way. We’ll post a smorgasbord of health- and fitness-related things.

Including yummy, “clean” recipes.  Workouts and exercises.  Random things we’re doing.  And our favorite swag.

Whether you’re an avid follower of every “fitfam” blog, a newbie just discovering the crazy world of health and fitness social media, or one of our friends that we blackmailed into following us so that we could feel loved, we hope you will find some value here. We don’t claim to be experts. Nor do we claim to have the answers to everything. But at the end of the day, we hope you walk away feeling slightly more informed, or at the very least entertained…

We’re here to show you that if you eat, train and think like an athlete, you will become an athlete!

Julia Avery
I was born and raised in Texas and am currently living and working in NYC. When it comes to health and fitness, I can’t get enough. I love working out, being in a gym, teaching others about fitness, stalking new recipes, experimenting in the kitchen and, obviously, sharing my cooking successes with others.

Gymnastics background, left that and gained some weight so joined the gym and developed love for running in college – led to running 1/2 marathons!

Over the past couple of years, my exercise of choice has evolved more towards CrossFit and high intensity interval training. Once I started lifting heavier and began focusing on performance and specific goals in my workouts, the muscle definition and fat burn just came along with it. And the most important part, I actually look forward to my workouts! And let’s be honest, if something is going to get my ass to the gym at 6:30am every morning, I sure as hell better enjoy it!

Dennys is my good friend and personal trainer, and I definitely would not be where I am today without him.  He completely changed the way I work out. He has also inspired me to get certified so that I can make a difference in other people’s lives, just like he has done for me.

The latest lifestyle change that I’ve made has been “clean eating” (at least 80% of the time). We’ll go into more detail in later blog posts, but it essentially involves eating REAL food, and for me, eating fewer grains and other foods that I’ve found my body has trouble processing.

Once I finally began thinking about food as fuel for my body, rather than thinking I had to work out all the time so that I could eat whatever I wanted, I really saw my body transform and all of the hard-earned muscle start to show.

Loves activities like Spartan races, etc.  Currently instructs at the Fhitting Room, NYC!

Kayte Natter
Personal trainer at Equinox in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, private fitness trainer, competition-prep coach and co-founder of the health & fitness blog, average2athlete.

Fitness has always been a passion of mine and has played a huge role in my life, but it wasn’t until about 2 years ago that I realized how much I enjoyed helping others discover a passion for health & fitness.

I grew up as a gymnast and cheerleader in Pittsburgh, PA and went on to cheer for the Fighting Blue Hens at the University of Delaware.  I earned my degree in Accounting, then my CPA and started working in the corporate world in NYC after graduation in 2006.  I continued cheerleading for the NBA and began competing in Fitness where I earned my Pro-Card in 2013.  After 6 years in an office, I decided to take the plunge and become a personal trainer at Equinox…and I’ve never been happier!  For more info, check out: Kayte Natter Fitness
